TV Review

Any Human Heart, Channel 4

"Jim Broadbent, Matthew Macfadyen and Sam Claflin take the lead role in William Boyd's funny, moving and ambitious adaptation of his best-selling novel, exploring one man's tumultuous and unpredictable journey through the 20th century."

Any Human Heart follows the life of Logan Mountstuart, a writer, who through-out his life is trying to write a best seller. But, little does he know, he has been writing it all along. Mountstuart writes everything down in his journal. From his youth in Oxford to his old-age France, he notes down all his emotions, thoughts and most importantly, his girlfriends. These are then recounted to the viewer after Mountstuart's older self rediscovers them whilst sorting out his belongings. This is a very emotional and touching process, which shows the pain of losing loved ones and the way Mountstuart has ended up where he is now.

Mountstuart's signature phrase is "Life is just all the good luck you have and all the bad luck you have, nothing else" and this pharse reinforces how much is left to chance in life. People Logan meets by chance end up completely changing his life and changing who he is.

Mountstuart lives through many historical events. As he is born at the start of the 20th century, he lives through: the abdication of King Edward VIII, World War Two, the assassination of J F Kennedy, communism in the Soviet Union and Margaret Thatcher as Prime minister. These events also considerably change Mountstuart's life and way of thinking.

Any Human Heart is a very thought provoking and thrilling series- once you've seen the first episode you'll never want to turn it off! It is also blessed with beautiful cinematography, costumes and a great cast. My review is only brief as I do not want to give too much of the story away, so, if you haven't seen it I really recommend buying it (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Any-Human-Heart-DVD-Broadbent/dp/B003RRXUHS/ref=amb_link_158784447_1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=auto-sparkle&pf_rd_r=1HF46A07R9MANH8BH9WC&pf_rd_t=301&pf_rd_p=223066247&pf_rd_i=any%20human%20heart) or if you are in the UK, watching it on 40D.

"Live for now and don't dwell on what could have been, look forward, to what will be."- Gloria Scabius, played by Kim Cattrall
