Bullfighting

After all the controversy in the summer about bullfighting, I decided to see one for myself whilst I was in Spain...

Despite getting some beautiful shots I was able to experience an authentic bullfight. The attitude of the Matadors and their elaborate costumes was beautiful in the golden evening light. It was fascinating to see something so steeped in tradition and culture. However, I did also see how the bulls were treated (which is what most of the controversy was about). In my opinion, the whole spectacle  seemed similar to something you would have experienced thousands of years ago in the Roman Colosseum and you felt that at any moment they would bring out the slaves into the ring. The only time when I thought it was really unfair on the bulls, was when horses were used. This distorted the somewhat level fighting ground which had been before. But, the bulls were slaughtered swiftly and smoothly, minimising the pain and I did slightly admire the courage of the Matadors turning their backs on a charging bull (but then again, I think they are crazy for fighting a bull in the first place!)

No matter what your opinion on bullfighting is, I think you should definitely watch one before they are banned. Bullfighting is a great bit of history that has been preserved through the years and stepping into a ring is like stepping into another era!
