In Fay's fall/winter advertising campaign, Tim Walker has managed to encapsulate the whole image of a company in a matter of seconds. Fay's clothing line consists of traditional country clothing fused with modern, more edgy city wear. Despite some of the outfits being far too preppy for my liking, Fay do have some interesting looks which can be found on their website (see above). Fans of Ralph Lauren and Burberry will love Fay's new spring clothing line.

My Favourite Podcasts

Not many people listen to podcasts and I think this is a great shame, as there are so many interesting ones out there. So, I have compiled a list of my top three podcasts to help get you started. They can all be found on the iTunes store and are really worth a listen. The key to a good podcast, is an interesting host and all of these tick that box. Some of the podcasts are audio and some are video...

A funny and topical comedy audio podcast. Can be downloaded from iTunes and is definitely worth a listen! My favourite podcast yet.

2. Beyond The Trailer Podcast

A great podcast for getting to know what the new releases are like and about. It is worth watching if you are thinking of going to see a film at the cinema. It is also good for me because, it is filmed in New York, which means I know all about the new releases before my friends have even seen the TV adverts!

3. Stuff Mom Never Told You

Part of the How Stuff Works group, Stuff Mom Never Told You is a very interesting podcast, which tackles issues to do with women. It is really great, however some of the topics can be a bit dull at times, but it is worth waiting for the good ones.

So, there are my top three podcasts! I hope you lovely followers take the time to listen/watch them and if you do, please leave your thoughts and comments below! I also have many other favourite podcasts (BBC Radio Four's Friday Night Comedy Podcast etc.), but they are originally broadcast as radio shows, so I guess they don't count?

Killer Costumes

Milena Canonero

Marie Antoinette Costume Designer

Milena Canonero is an Italian costume design, most well-known for her costumes in the 2006 film, Marie Antoinette. Canonero won her third Oscar for the fabulous, lavish and extravagant costumes she created for the film. 

Here is some more information on Canonero's career from Wikipedia:

"Born in Turin, Italy, Canonero studied art, design history and costume design in Genoa. She then moved to England, where she began working in smalltheatre and film productions. While designing for commercials in London, she met many film directors.^[1]

Her first major film work as a costume designer was in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange (1971). She worked with Kubrick again in Barry Lyndon(1975), for which she won her first Oscar, together with Ulla-Britt Söderlund. Her second win was for Chariots of Fire (1981), directed by Hugh Hudson.

She is married to actor Marshall Bell.

Canonero has also designed the costumes for several stagings directed by Otto Schenk, such as Il trittico (Puccini, Vienna State Opera 1979), As You Like It (Shakespeare, Salzburg Festival 1980), Die Fledermaus (Strauss, Vienna State Opera 1980), Andrea Chénier (Giordano, Vienna State Opera 1981), and Arabella (Strauss, Metropolitan Opera1983). For director Luc Bondy she created the costumes for new productions of Puccini's Tosca (Metropolitan Opera, 2009), and of Euripides' Helena (Burgtheater, Vienna, 2010).

In 1986, Canonero became the costume designer for the television series Miami Vice.

In 2001, Canonero received the Career Achievement Award in Film from the Costume Designers Guild. She won her third Oscar for Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette (2006)."

How would you describe your photographic vision? What kind of feel do you try and create in your photos?

My photos are dreamscapes (infact, ‘dreamscapes’ is the title of my exhibition in Bristol early next year!) I like to play with what I have to create something out of reality. I love using natural light and soft peachy tones to create something serene, with a hint of the sixties in it.

Name three photographers you like and why. Who inspires you?

Tim Walker is my favourite photographer, I feel like sometimes we are on the same wavelength with our ideas (however obviously his execution is so much more incredible!). I love his use of oversized props, and the childlike, misty quality to his images. Another photographer I admire is Denise Grünstein, for her quietly beautiful style. I also adore the work of Elene Usdin, a Parisian Photographer who shares my passion for the unison of the surreal and fashion.

Your work is very creative. Where do you get your ideas from?

I’ve no idea where my ideas originate from, however things that I am often inspired by are the countryside near to my home, unusual props and literature.

James Nader is a UK based photographer, who focuses mainly on fashion and beauty. He used to only photograph still life and do commercial photography, but luckily for us, he has recently switched to fashion and beauty. Here are some quotes and bits of advice from the man himself!

“You start with various elements to create a story, clothes and styling, make-up, location etc. and you write it! I was always inspired by the great black and white Hollywood classics and loved the use of light. Photographing people allowed me to reproduce this for myself"

“One word of advice, don’t rely on a numbers game and what I mean by this don’t expect to get a great shot just by shooting and shooting and hoping for the best. If I don’t like it or it isn’t working I wont shoot it and I will tell everyone that this is so. We then reset and start a new pose or location. If it is the model who isn’t working, be subtle and offer a range of scenarios to try. If  it's still not working, move it, don’t try to force it.”

“Just remember to be flexible, creative, research your locations, choose models carefully and keep it simple.”

“I think the day you really believe that you have made it to the top (whatever or where ever that is) is the day you are not doing so well! And maybe left behind as there is always someone better than you waiting around the corner!”

“I like minimal lighting and I am kind of arty in a way, but I'm not too far out. I do like high fashion but I don't go too over the top. I keep it simple and I don't over complicate the lighting. If I have available daylight I use some of it and balance with the flash. I tend to use continuous or tungsten light such as a red head or blonde to give me the illuminated effect I achieve. Flash is great but immediate where as continuous lighting allows the scene to build up light, texture and depth. The colours are richer and more intense, the only downfall would be the that the exposure is slow. The model has to be aware that the lighting exposure is a fraction of a second and keep still."

Georgian Style!

Recently, I came across this video explaining the beauty routines of women in the Georgian era. They did some pretty crazy stuff! They would do anything from smother their faces in paint made from lead to shaving off their eyebrows and replacing them with mouse fur!
